Photos are one of the best ways for you to share your sewing work with the world.
Whether you're snapping photos to share on your personal Instagram, taking product shots for your shop, or capturing sew-a-long stills for your local sewing group - there are many different reasons to want to up your photography game.
Now with nearly everyone having access to a camera in their pocket it is easier than ever to get started.
Read on for 5 simple tips to instantly improve your photos. (Most images in this guide were taken with a simple iPhone camera!)
Toys, clothes, and empty boxes distract from the subject of your photo. If you need to clear the frame, toss stuff behind you while you snap the pic (we do it all the time!).
Whenever possible utilize natural light (sunlight) as opposed to indoor lights. It's more flattering on skin tones and typically provides more even lighting. Note - try not to take pictures in direct sunlight (stand in the shade) if the sun is directly overhead, because it'll cast hard shadows.
The most flattering images are taken from slightly above your subject's eyes. Kneel down, lay down, or get up on a stool - whatever it takes to get some shots from this angle. As you're focusing on their eyes make sure you also don't cut their toes out of the picture!
Camera lenses are rounded. This creates a slight distortion around the edges of every image. If you're standing too close to the person you're photographing then their face or body can look stretched out. Standing further away also gives you the opportunity to crop the image later!
When photographing clothing items you've sewn you want the pictures to focus on the right things. Perhaps the easiest tip on this article, finding a blank wall will make the biggest difference in your images. The busier the backdrop, the more likely your subject is going to be de-emphasized. Visually minimalist images stand out better on smaller screens.
Taking better photos is all about trial and error. The more you practice the better you'll get. While these tips will help bring your photos to the next level, they should be seen more as loose guidelines instead of hard and fast rules. We've taken plenty of pictures that intentionally break one or more of these rules in order to get a specific shot. As you experiment with your photographic style you'll find what works best for you and your makes.
Speaking of, we'd love to see the items you sew! Please tag us in and Lowland makes with #lowlandkids. Happy sewing!
]]>Welcome to "Landing Your Clothing Line in Stores: A Practical Guide". You've put your heart and soul into your clothing brand, and it's paid off. You've got a fan base, online sales are growing, but there's one more step you're ready to take – seeing your apparel in physical stores. It sounds daunting (because it can be), but we're here to help you navigate this journey.
Together, we'll walk through a practical, step-by-step guide to implement a successful wholesale retail strategy and land your clothing line on store shelves. No fluff, just actionable advice, real-life examples, and valuable insights to help you take your clothing line to the next level.
Who are you dressing? Eco-conscious moms or perpetually-active toddlers? Trendsetters or budget-conscious shoppers? Identify this, because the allure of your designs isn't the only factor. Retailers want to know who's going to be buying your clothes.
So, who's your target audience? What keeps them coming back to your clothing line? To learn their preferences and shopping behaviors, employ surveys, focus groups, or social media polls. This market research will provide valuable insights for your wholesale retail strategy.
Sure, the clothes are important, but there's more to it. Your brand's story is your distinguishing factor. It's what will captivate store buyers. Share a compelling narrative that resonates with their customers, and then back it up with exceptional clothes.
Have a clear theme or message? Shout it out loud. Establish a brand mission statement and a unique selling proposition (USP) to differentiate you from competitors. And you don't need to break the bank to establish a cohesive visual identity. Consider using:
There's a myth that having a robust online presence isn't crucial for a wholesale retail strategy. Let's debunk that right away. Buyers scout online for the latest trends, so your digital presence must be a showstopper.
Cultivate your online profiles. High-quality photos, an engaged follower base, and a compelling brand story are key to landing your clothes in stores. Network with influencers, bloggers, and photographers to enhance your online reputation. Consider targeted ads to increase visibility and connect with potential buyers.
Now, let's get to the crux of your wholesale retail strategy: pricing. Factoring in wholesale pricing is crucial because you'll be selling at a significant discount to retailers.
For instance, if your dress retails for $100 on your website, the wholesale price to retailers might be 50% off, making it $50 per piece. This enables the retailer to mark up the price for their profit.
But don't just slash prices without considering your costs. Calculate your cost of goods sold (COGS) — including production, materials, labor, and overhead — then add your desired profit margin. This ensures you cover your expenses while making a profit, even when selling at wholesale prices.
Your goal is to find a perfect fit. Think about where your customers usually shop. It's not just about demographics; a store's atmosphere, values, and ethos should align with your brand.
Time to make your move. Draft concise but compelling emails to store buyers (not managers). Show them you've done your research and explain how your clothing line could elevate their sales. Always personalize your outreach — generic emails are a definite no-go.
Highlight specific aspects of the store that align with your brand. Provide a brief overview of your clothing line, including styles, materials, and any past successes. Share a link to your online portfolio or attach a lookbook to showcase your designs.
Here’s a sample email you can use:
Subject: [Your Brand] – Organic, Handmade Newborn Clothes for [Store Name]
Dear [Buyer's Name],
I hope this message finds you well. I'm [Your Name], the founder of [Your Brand], a boutique specializing in handmade organic newborn clothes.
Next up in your wholesale retail strategy is to get samples into the hands of store buyers. Consider participating in trade shows, a fantastic platform to showcase your line to industry professionals.
Invest in professional packaging for your samples to make a lasting impression. Include a personalized note, a lookbook, or a line sheet with product specifics and wholesale prices. Keep track of samples sent out and follow up after they've had a chance to review your clothing.
Trade shows provide networking opportunities with buyers, store owners, and other industry folks. Research upcoming ones in your niche and book a booth. Stand out with striking displays and signage, and be ready to discuss your brand and products. Collect contact info from interested attendees and keep the conversation going after the event.
When a store shows interest, it's time for negotiations. Be prepared to discuss pricing, returns, and payment terms.
Remember, this is a two-way street. Lay out your expectations too.
Define minimum order quantities, lead times, and shipping costs. Ensure you have a written agreement outlining the terms of your wholesale retail strategy to safeguard both parties.
It's challenging, it's a grind, but perseverance is key. Learn from each experience, fine-tune your strategy. Network, gather insights, and learn from fellow designers and industry professionals.
Continuously monitor your brand's performance in stores, and be receptive to feedback from buyers and customers to make necessary adjustments.
Here's to your brand gracing those store shelves soon!
Understanding your target market involves researching and identifying the group of customers who are most likely to buy your products. This can be achieved through surveys, social media polls, and examining buying trends within your industry.
A strong brand identity is built on a clear message, unique selling proposition, and a consistent aesthetic. This includes having a consistent logo, color palette, and tone of voice. Free online tools like Logolivery for logo creation and Coolors for color palette selection can be very useful in this process.
An online presence is critical as it provides visibility and credibility for your brand. It is often the first touchpoint customers have with your brand. Store buyers also scout online for the latest trends, so make sure you leave a positive and lasting impression.
Pricing your collection for wholesale involves considering the production cost, the standard retail price, and how much profit you want to make. Typically, the wholesale price is about 50% of the suggested retail price.
Finding store buyers involves researching the stores that you feel would be a good fit for your brand and products. You can do this by visiting their websites or physical locations, observing the types of products they sell, and understanding their brand values. Store buyers' contact details may be available on the store's website, but if not, you can call or visit the store to request this information. Remember to approach them professionally, showing that you have done your research and believe your brand would be a beneficial addition to their store.

When it comes to making sewing videos for TikTok, few have seen explosive success like Haidee (@sewwithhaidee). Currently at over 300K followers and 12M likes, it's safe to say she knows a thing or two about making Tiktok videos. We asked Haidee to share some tips on how to grow your TikTok following in 2023. Here's what we learned (peep some of her most popular videos using Lowland patterns! 😍):

On TikTok, it's the real, unfiltered content that takes the crown. It's all about showcasing your personality, your passions, and the unique quirks that make you or your business special. Your followers will be drawn to you, often choosing to support your small business not only because they love what you sell but because they enjoy your authentic presence. Don't hesitate to take inspiration from what others are doing and then spin it in your own unique way.
Choosing and sticking to a niche is like finding a home on TikTok. Your channel could be a launchpad for your small business, a repository of useful tips, or a step-by-step guide platform. The key here is consistency in your niche - this will attract and retain followers who appreciate and engage with your content.

Joining a trending challenge is like catching the perfect wave for surfers. It can land you on TikTok's coveted "For You" page, bringing your videos to a larger audience. Integrating a trend with your niche can increase your visibility, potentially translating to more views and followers.
Even if it's not normally music you'd pick, using trending sounds can boost your visibility. Think of it like background music at a party - it might not define the event, but it definitely gets people's attention.
When you use trending sounds, you are more likely to capture the interest of users who are following or searching for that particular trend. This can help you build a following and increase the reach of your content. Additionally, using trending sounds can make your content feel more current and relevant, which can help you stand out in a sea of similar content.
So, while it may seem like a small detail, incorporating trending sounds into your content strategy can have a big impact on your overall success.

Opt for a less is more approach when it comes to hashtags. Oversaturating your posts with hashtags can confuse TikTok's algorithm. Aim for about five relevant hashtags per post, and make sure they resonate with your niche. While trending hashtags can give you a boost, always ensure they align with your content.
Consistency is the secret ingredient in TikTok's recipe for success. While you don't need to churn out videos like a factory, maintaining regular activity can help promote your content. A balanced strategy, featuring a steady stream of quality content, can spark your account's growth.

Although it's tempting to obsess over views and followers, remember that TikTok is more about community building. A giant following doesn't necessarily equate to high engagement. Prioritize your followers' interaction - responding to comments, addressing queries, or even a simple thank-you can go a long way in nurturing your community.
Don't let the pressure of growth overshadow your love for what you do. Continue being yourself and sharing your passion. People will love watching you do what you enjoy doing. Growth on any social media platform takes time, so remember to enjoy the process. It's all about having fun on this vibrant platform!

So there you have it, your master guide to making waves on TikTok. Remember, this platform is a journey rather than a destination. It's about expressing your passion, connecting with your community, and embracing authenticity. Growth will come, and it will bring with it a supportive audience who appreciates you for who you truly are.
So let your hair down, step into your niche, and enjoy the exciting ride that is TikTok. Because, in the end, it's not just about building a business; it's about building a community that resonates with your authentic self. Happy TikToking!

Picture your brand as a person. Your voice, or writing style, reflects your identity. It's what sets your brand apart from competitors. In many ways, your customers choose your products because your voice resonates with them.
Bland, generic product descriptions make it difficult for customers to pick you over your competitors. Clearly communicate the value of your products and write in a way that connects with your audience.
Consider this example for a new shirt:
Plain product description:
Better product description:
Did we mention that Facebook Groups and Instagram accounts are FREE? Did you know that’s how we got started at Lowland Kids?
Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest, are where visuals steal the show. And we all know people are visual shoppers.
Share behind-the-scenes peeks, adorable customer moments, and stunning product snaps to keep your followers craving more.
But hold up! Don't just post and vanish. Build real connections by replying to comments, tackling messages, and expressing appreciation for your fans' support.
Oh, and the hashtag game is real. Especially when you’re just getting started, use relevant hashtags to help your content reach a broader audience.
Aiming for a wider reach? Join forces with influencers who vibe with your values. Roll up your sleeves and hunt for the ideal influencer using pertinent hashtags or influencer marketing platforms.
Once you've discovered the perfect match, hit them up with a friendly message highlighting why their audience would flip for your products. Don't hold back on what you bring to the table!

Be the hero your customers deserve by swiftly addressing inquiries, offering helpful solutions, and consistently going above and beyond.
Encourage your customers to spread the love with glowing reviews and testimonials. Etsy, Shopify, and other platforms let you request reviews for cheap or even FREE!
You can then take those glowing reviews and use them in your social media, on your website, and even in your packaging.
Not all reviews will be positive, but remember, even negative feedback can reveal valuable nuggets for improvement.

We hear it all the time. In fact, it's one of the top three most popular questions we see in our Facebook group.
You've sewn something amazing, you're ready to sell it, and now you're stuck trying to figure out how much to charge for that item. So, where's the best place to start?
You might visit Etsy to get an idea of what people are charging. But the problem you'll come across is that prices on Etsy range from "How do they make any money??" to "No way will someone pay that much!"
You then check out pricing at stores like Zara or H&M. They sell similar-looking stuff, right? But their products are not handmade. And often, they aren't using the same quality of materials.
Flustered, you search online for articles on how to price your handmade goods. Forums and articles can contain helpful information, but you have to sift through mountains of content to find what you're looking for.
We've been there. And we did the research for you!
Keep reading to find the best way to calculate how much you should charge for your handmade clothes.
If you're like me, you tend to undervalue your work. After all, the clothes didn't take you that long to make, and you probably find it enjoyable. If you can bring in a few dollars on top of supply costs, you'll be happy, right? Right??
Well, not exactly.
Keeping it straightforward is essential, but don't oversimplify things. We want to make sure you're actually making a profit!
So, where do you start? By asking these three questions:
Let's go through these one at a time.
Who are you selling to? Here are some questions to help you hone in on your target market:
Side note: Customers shopping at boutiques or Etsy usually look for handmade, sustainable clothes. Know your audience!
Let's group typical types of customers into three categories:
Old Navy knows its customers. They're not spending time and money introducing super premium fabrics into their stores. On the opposite end, Ralph Lauren's customers expect materials that are higher end, more durable, softer, more breathable…you get it. GAP lands somewhere in the middle.
Why is it important to know your customer? Because choosing who you are selling to will determine what materials you use! And what materials you use plays a huge factor in how you price your goods.
Now that you have an idea of who your customer is, the next step is finding the right fabric types. We used to sell U.S.-milled luxury fabrics, so we know firsthand how expensive this material can be! That said, it really does vary quite a bit.
On the high end (Elvelyckan, SYAS), fabrics run for $20+ per yard. In the middle range (RCF), these can run $10-20 per yard. On the affordable end (Walmart, Threadbear), fabrics run for $10 per yard and less. If you get lucky, you might even snag some for a couple dollars per yard!
As you can see, your target customer really determines your fabric cost when all is said and done.
But wait – aren't there other supply costs? Yes! You also use notions. Those can add up if your design features buttons, zippers, elastic, tags, etc. It depends on what you're making, but we factor in roughly $0.50 per item for notions.
Lastly, it's essential to factor in your indirect costs. Things like sewing machine tune-ups, new cutting mats, and part of your electricity bill.
Let's put it into a formula:
This one is simple. How much do you charge for your time – your labor? I'd recommend starting at no less than $15/hr and working up from there.
Labor can vary substantially. We see professional seamstresses regularly charge $50+ per hour. Are you making premium or technically challenging clothes? Can you pump out twice as much per hour at a higher quality than your competition?
Don't worry if you're not sure how much to charge. We'll use $20/hr in the examples below to give you an idea.
Now we have a basic formula for calculating costs. Simply add in your hourly rate to find your minimum price:
Supply Cost + Labor = Minimum Price
Simple, right? Let's dive in with a couple of examples:
In addition, I recommend adding about 10% on top of your minimum price. This will help cover those indirect costs we talked about earlier.
That brings our prices to roughly $17 and $9, respectively. You can easily see how the cost of your fabric plays a huge role in determining your prices!
Use the formula to get an idea of where to start pricing. Of course, you can always charge more if customers are willing to pay more!
Here are a couple more price examples from our Facebook group. For more like this, search "price" in the Lowland Kids Sewing Thread Facebook Group.
Now you have a basic pricing strategy! Remember, you are not competing against mass producers. Lean into what makes your clothes unique. Emphasize handmade quality, sustainability, local production, and higher fabric quality if that’s what you use. Find the customers who want to buy your product and tailor your offerings to them.
Good luck, and please feel free to ask us questions in our Facebook group! We’d love to hear about your experiences and successes.
1. How do I determine the right price for my handmade clothes? To find the right price for your handmade clothes, consider your target customer, supply costs, and the value of your time. Use the formula: Supply Cost + Labor = Minimum Price, and add a 10% margin to cover indirect costs.
2. How do I identify my target customer? Think about who you want to sell to: high-end customers, budget customers, or those looking for a balance between quality and price. Your target customer will influence the materials you use and the prices you can charge.
3. How do I calculate my supply costs? Add up the cost of your fabric, notions (buttons, zippers, elastic, tags, etc.), and indirect costs (sewing machine tune-ups, cutting mats, electricity) to determine your supply costs.
4. How do I determine my labor cost? Consider how much your time is worth (start at no less than $15/hr) and factor in your productivity. Keep in mind that professional seamstresses often charge $50+/hr for their time.
5. How do I factor in fabric costs? Fabric costs vary greatly depending on the quality and source. High-end fabrics can cost $20+/yd, mid-range fabrics $10-20/yd, and budget fabrics $10/yd or less. Your target customer will help determine the appropriate fabric cost.
6. How do I adjust my pricing for different items? Apply the same pricing formula to each item, taking into account variations in material usage, labor, and the specific target audience for each product.
7. How can I learn more about pricing handmade clothes? Join the Lowland Kids Sewing Thread Facebook Group to connect with fellow artisans, ask questions, and share your own pricing insights and experiences.

Tired of constantly printing and cutting out paper patterns for your sewing projects? You're not alone. Projector sewing is the perfect solution to save time and reduce paper waste. It can be intimidating to start, especially if you're new to using projectors. Worry not, we've got your back!
In this blog post, we'll guide you through the six essential steps to embark on your projector sewing journey. From selecting the right projector to fine-tuning it for precise pattern sizing, we'll cover all you need to know to get started. Let's jump in!
Start by determining the type of projector best suited for your needs, considering factors like ceiling height, budget, and portability. The two most common projector types are Short Throw and Ultra Short Throw projectors. Ultra short throws are budget-friendly and suitable for most situations where a projector can be mounted.
Once you've chosen your projector, decide on its location. If you have a dedicated sewing area, consider mounting your projector on the ceiling or a wall. However, if you need to move your projector between rooms, opt for a portable stand or position it on a table.
Before diving into sewing, ensure that the table or surface you'll be projecting onto is completely flat. This is crucial for accurate measurements and a successful project outcome. Grab a level to double-check your table's evenness and think about investing in a sewing-specific mat. These mats are typically self-healing, so they won't suffer damage from your needles or rotary cutter.
Now it's time to mount or set up your projector at the correct height for your table. Ensure that the image projects onto the table without distortion or blurring. Adjust the height with a tripod or stand if needed. Once you've found the right position, use a level to make sure the projector is completely level.
Connect your projector to your device using an HDMI cable or a wireless connection. Many projectors come with built-in Wi-Fi, allowing you to connect your smartphone or tablet directly. Make sure to select the right input source on your projector and the correct display mode on your device.
Lastly, calibrate your projector to guarantee accurately sized patterns. A calibration grid, like the one found in the Projectors for Sewing Facebook Group, can help with this. Although calibration can be intimidating, once it's done, you're ready to cut!

If you have been using Lowland Kids' patterns for a while, you might be familiar with the term capsule wardrobe. I remember seeing beautiful capsules on the Lowland Facebook group, and I wanted to try making my own. But once I started, I had so many questions about sewing a capsule wardrobe:
Since then, I have made several seasonal capsule wardrobes for my kids. I came up with a comprehensive method to simplify the capsule wardrobe sewing process. Read on to learn 8 simple steps to sew your own capsule wardrobe!
If you are new to the term capsule wardrobe, here is an explanation from the blog Modern Minimalism: “A capsule wardrobe is simply a collection of clothing composed of thoughtfully curated, easily interchangeable items designed to maximize the number of outfits that you can create.
Essentially, a capsule wardrobe allows you to create a variety of different looks with a small selection of clothes. A capsule wardrobe can have as many or as few clothes that work for you.”
The same thing as it is for adults! A simplified seasonal wardrobe with fewer pieces that can easily mix and match to reduce overwhelm.
I decided to sew 20 pieces for my 7-month-old daughter’s spring capsule wardrobe. I chose this number because it enables me enough extra pieces to go one week without doing laundry.
Note: You do not have to sew 20 pieces to create a capsule wardrobe—that is just the number that I chose!
The beauty of creating your own is that you can make as many or as few pieces as you need! You could also make a few pieces and supplement with pieces that you buy or already own.
How many times have you gone to pick out an outfit for your child and you can find five shirts but no matching pants? If you’re like me, the matching pants are probably somewhere in the laundry that got folded but never put away.
Sewing a capsule wardrobe for your kids will ensure that you never have to dig for a matching set of clothes, and it will simplify the getting-your-kids-ready process each morning.
Since sewing capsule wardrobes for my son (3) and daughter (7 months), I barely have to think about what they are going to wear the next day. I just grab something that is weather-appropriate, and it automatically matches due to being a capsule wardrobe!
In my previous experiences creating capsule wardrobes for my children, I initially made too many pieces and chose colors that didn't mix well with others. I also didn't consider the in-between weather that required layering.
To address these issues, I created a system for planning a capsule wardrobe from start to finish. This comprehensive method simplifies the process, making it easier to sew for your kids. In this article, I'll share the 8 steps I take when creating a capsule wardrobe from scratch.
Sewing allows you to tailor clothes to fit your child's body instead of trying to make them fit into a ready-to-wear size. Most people fall between multiple sizes, making shopping for store-bought clothing frustrating.
Before sewing a capsule wardrobe for your child, take their measurements and refer to the size charts provided with each Lowland pattern. If your child falls between sizes, you can print both sizes on one page and grade between them for a perfect fit.
Creating a capsule wardrobe takes time and effort, so you'll want to make it last as long as possible. If your child is between sizes, consider sizing up for longevity. You can also size up in shirts, as they can be worn oversized initially.
It's trickier to size up for children under a year old since they change sizes quickly. For my daughter's spring capsule, I made warm-weather pieces like dresses and shorts larger than other pieces so she can wear them throughout the summer.
When choosing colors for a capsule wardrobe, it's important to have variety while ensuring that the colors easily mix and match. Focusing on six different colors typically works best.
Choose two neutrals that mix and match with everything in your color palette, two to three colors that coordinate with each other, and one to two patterns that can seamlessly interchange with the colors in your capsule.
For my daughter's capsule, I used two neutrals, three colors, and one pattern from fabric that I had in my stash from when I operated a small sewing business a few years ago. I really wanted to use a floral pattern too, but I didn't have one on hand and decided to just use what I already had available.
In the past, I really struggled with knowing how many pieces to make when doing a capsule for my daughter. Because she is only 7-months-old, she goes through quite a few outfit changes during the day.
I wanted to have enough extra pieces so that I wouldn’t have to do laundry every day, but I didn’t want so many pieces that it was overwhelming or took me forever to make. I also already had a few pieces on hand in my daughters' upcoming size.
The capsule wardrobe that I sewed for her has 5 pairs of pants, 5 tops, 1 dress, 2 shorts, 1 cardigan, 3 rompers, and 3 headbands. This gives me enough options for 7 days, plus a few extras for outfit changes during the day as needed.
I do have some other clothing pieces in her size as mentioned in the chart above. But I have found that her 20 piece capsule wardrobe has more than enough pieces for the week--even if I did not have the additional RTW (ready-to-wear) pieces.
When choosing categories for your capsule, think about what your child actually wears on a regular basis and pick accordingly. I did not include pajamas in her capsule, but you definitely could in yours! HERE are a few of my favorite Lowland pajama patterns.
I put a lot of thought into the patterns that I choose for capsule wardrobes. The capsule that I am sharing in this post is for the spring in the Midwest. In the Midwest, our temperatures range from cool to hot for the next few months, so I wanted to create a capsule that would be versatile for these changes.
When planning this spring capsule, I considered patterns that layer easily. I love the Sunshine Dress because it looks cute on its own in warmer months, but it also is adorable layered with a fitted shirt like the Ellie Top and Ribbed Leggings in colder months.
Shorties are also really versatile because they can be worn with tights in colder months or on their own in the summer.
I intentionally chose patterns like the Summer Peplum Cami and the Slim Cardigan which can be layered as the temperatures change.
If you live in a place that doesn't have much variety in temperature, focus on choosing patterns that work best for the weather that you have on a daily basis.
Here are the patterns that I chose for my daughter's spring capsule wardrobe:
Tops:
Bottoms
Shorties (x2)
Rompers
Sweater Rompers (x2)
Raglan Romper (x1)
Dresses
Sunshine Dress (x1)
Outerwear
Headbands (x3)
These are not Lowland patterns, but you can find a lot of simple, free headband patterns online, similar to these.
It's also important to take fabric into consideration when making a capsule wardrobe. For pullovers and rompers, I recommend using French Terry, waffle knit, or slub. Rib, jersey, and waffle knits work well for dresses and headbands.
For leggings or fitted pants, try rib knit or a stretchy jersey fabric. French Terry and slub are also great options for looser pants and shorts. If you live in a cooler climate, choose lighter-weight fabrics like jersey, rib, or slub. For warmer climates, choose waffle knit or French Terry. And if you live in a place where the weather drastically fluctuates throughout the day, you can use a combination of the fabrics mentioned above for layering pieces.
When you're working with so many patterns and pieces, it can be kind of overwhelming to stay organized. If you use printed patterns, I recommend keeping them in a three-ringed binder with plastic sleeves.
Additionally, it saves a lot of time if you cut everything out at once. When making my daughter's capsule, I chose the colors/fabric for each individual piece as I went.
Because I cut everything out at once, I was able to see if there were certain colors that I hadn't used very much in her capsule. As I cut the items out, I put a sticky note with the pattern name and size on top of the pieces so that I can stay organized when going back to sew the pieces together.
If using matching thread, I recommend sewing the patterns that have the same color fabric. If you're not worried about matching thread, try sewing the same types of pieces at once so that you can focus on one pattern at a time.
The last step to planning—or more like implementing—a capsule wardrobe is to plan outfits. This is my favorite part!
See how many different outfit combinations you can come up with! I like to try to do a variety of monochrome outfits and mixing and matching.
The thing that I love most about sewing capsule wardrobes for my kids is that I can reach in their drawer and everything already matches. I don’t have to even think about creating a cohesive outfit for them in the morning!

Welcome to the exciting world of sewing, where you can bring your creative ideas to life by making adorable, comfy, and trendy clothing! As you embark on your sewing journey with Lowland Kids, we want to share some common mistakes that beginners often make.
But don't worry! We're here to help you navigate these potential pitfalls and make sewing an enjoyable experience. So, grab a cup of tea and let's dive into the 5 common mistakes new sewists make and how to avoid them.
Picture this: You've just finished sewing the cutest little dress for your niece, only to find out that it's too small after the first wash.
This heartache can be avoided by simply pre-washing your fabric before you start sewing. Why? Because most fabrics shrink during their first wash.
So, always pre-wash and dry your fabric using the same method you'll use for the finished garment. That way, you can ensure a perfect fit, every time.
We get it—once you have a beautiful fabric in hand, it's tempting to dive right into sewing. But hold your horses!
Taking your time to cut your pattern pieces accurately is crucial for a polished final product. Make sure to use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter, follow the grain line, and carefully transfer all markings from the pattern to the fabric.
Trust us, this extra time spent on precision will save you a lot of headache later on.
We know you're excited to see your creation come to life, but don't skip the crucial step of sewing a test garment, also known as a muslin.
A muslin helps you check the fit and make any necessary adjustments before you cut into your precious fabric. Plus, it's a great way to practice new techniques without the fear of messing up.
So, always create a muslin, especially when you're trying a new pattern or working with an unfamiliar fabric.
In the world of sewing, consistency is key. And that's especially true when it comes to seam allowances.
Be sure to follow the seam allowance specified in your pattern to ensure your garment fits correctly and looks professional. If you're struggling to maintain a consistent seam allowance, try using a seam guide or marking your sewing machine with masking tape.
Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't be too hard on yourself if you don't get it right the first time.
As a new sewist, you might not realize the significance of proper tension settings on your sewing machine. However, incorrect tension can lead to issues like thread breakage, skipped stitches, or uneven seams.
Take the time to familiarize yourself with your sewing machine's tension settings and test various settings on scrap fabric before beginning your project.
Keep in mind that the optimal tension may differ depending on the fabric and thread you're using.
There you have it—5 common mistakes new sewists make and how to avoid them. We hope these tips will help you navigate the world of sewing with more confidence and ease.
Remember, everyone makes mistakes, especially when learning a new skill. The key is to learn from them and keep pushing forward.
So, take a deep breath, be patient with yourself, and embrace the learning process. With practice and perseverance, you'll soon be creating beautiful, comfy, and trendy children's clothing that will make your loved ones beam with pride.
Happy sewing!

]]>In this 3 part Taylor Joggers Sew-A-Long I’ll show you how to cut and grade the pattern, prepare the moto knee patch, and fully assemble the joggers.
Grading the Taylor Joggers pattern is super simple. As always we optimize our patterns for projectors so you can speed things up even more!
In this video I'm using a projector and hid all the layers except for 12/18 month Width and 6/9 month Length.
You can do the same thing with a printed pattern by only printing the layers you need.
In the video you'll see that we cut the orange lines (12/18m) for the Width, and the pink lines (6/9m) for the Length.
--
First cut out a rectangle (see instructions for recommended dimensions).
Next, mark every 1” (2.5cm) down the sides.
Press down at the first or second mark. I opt for the second mark because I like to have a little space at the top and bottom so that my seams don't get sewn in when assembling the pants.
Once pressed, use a long straight stitch or chain stitch (single needle on a coverstitch machine) and sew ¼” (.6cm).
Then go press the next mark and sew that seam. Make sure to stay consistent with the side you’re sewing! Sometimes the seams tend to lean more one way.
Once you have a few rows, place your pattern piece (#3) on top and see if you need more, or if you’re happy with the amount you can stop there!
The instructions have a suggested amount of rows but it can vary depending on what fabric you’re using and the precision of your seam allowance.
When you are happy with the number of rows, cut your #3 pieces from the pattern and make sure to cut them as opposites.
--
This is a walk through of the pattern assembly. For pictured step by step instructions you can watch the video or check out the instructions!
I hope you found the Taylor Joggers Sew-A-Long videos helpful!
]]>There's never been a better time to launch and grow your very own handmade sewing shop. With passion, skill, and the right strategies, you can turn your love for sewing into a thriving business.
In this guide we'll share five powerful tips that will help you boost your brand and connect with your customers.
Social media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook are perfect for showcasing your sewing shop, telling your story, and building an authentic brand. Follow these tips for a winning social media strategy:
Provide a mix of promotional and non-promotional content, such as sewing tutorials, fabric care guides, or personal stories. Collaborate with influencers and other sewing shops for joint promotions or giveaways to increase your reach and build lasting relationships.
One of the most common reasons we see new businesses fail (in clothing and pretty much every market) is that their marketing and messaging is too broad. To stand out, focus on a narrow niche. Find a very specific gap in the market and craft all of your marketing towards that thing.
A few benefits of hyper focus include:
Understanding Pain Points: By narrowing down your niche, you can better understand your customers' specific pain points, allowing you to create products that truly address their needs. Your shop will stand out by positioning yourself as a solution to their problem rather than just another generic clothing option.
Crafting a Unique Message: A niche focus enables you to develop a unique message tailored to your target audience. By concentrating on a specific customer type, you can showcase what sets your handmade sewing shop apart from the competition and truly stand out.
Building Authority and Trust: Embracing your niche allows you to immerse yourself in that area, speak your customer's language, and become an expert. This expertise and authority will help build trust with your customers, which can ultimately lead to increased conversion and long-term loyalty.
By discovering and focusing on your niche, you'll create a strong foundation for your handmade sewing shop, setting the stage for continued growth and success.
Here are a few examples of niches you could focus on:
Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and customer preferences by attending industry events and joining online forums. Anticipate market shifts and adapt your product offerings to remain relevant and appealing.
Optimize your Etsy shop with high-quality product photos and detailed, SEO-friendly descriptions. Use relevant keywords to help potential customers find your products.
Monitor your shop's performance using Etsy's built-in analytics tools. Make informed decisions about product offerings, pricing strategies, and promotional efforts based on data insights.
An exceptional unboxing experience transcends mere transaction; it's an introduction to your brand's narrative, an invitation to build an enduring connection, and the catalyst to transform a casual purchaser into a devoted fan. A few ideas to try out:
Include social media prompts in your packaging inserts to encourage customers to share their purchases online. User-generated content can provide social proof, increase brand visibility, and attract new customers.
Participate in local pop-up shops and markets to:
Ensure your booth is visually appealing and represents your brand well. Offer special promotions or discounts exclusive to the event. Collect email addresses or social media handles from booth visitors to stay connected and build an engaged community around your brand.

"How do you take flatlays?" "Do you need an expensive camera?" "What about lights and backdrops?"
These are a few common questions we see in our Facebook Group. And while you certainly can purchase expensive equipment, the fact is that great flatlays can be cheap and easy!
If you, like so many other sewists, are wanting to take a flatlay using what you already have, here are a few tips. (Each of the pictures you see was taken with an iPhone!)
Find the best light in your space - any natural light source will do.
Don’t be afraid to hang things from hooks or shelves, or drape them over baskets.
Sometimes I choose not to lay my items flat to photograph them. When I hang clothes up the same rules apply - keep your background basic and a solid, neutral color.
Hanging up the clothing item has the added bonus of showing off drape!
You can also shoot pictures of items from the side or at different angles to switch it up. Shooting from the side is a great way to show off your deliciously chunky waffle knit.
I love using seasonal items and greenery. I’ve purchased a few items specifically for flat lays but usually use what I already have.
Sometimes I like to just use the piece of clothing I’ve sewn, and a contrasting background. Be mindful of the props you use, you want them to add interest to the piece that you are photographing, not distract from it!
Try to create some balance in your photo, rather than perfect symmetry. An example of this is adding a flower or some greenery to one side of your photo and a prop that goes well with your main piece to the other side (shoes, hat, book, etc).
Experiment with creating different shapes with your items. A great way to learn how to place the items in your flat lay is to look at photos that are appealing to you, and notice what they have in common.
You can tell a story with the items you photograph. As an example: Pairing Christmas Pj’s with a Christmas book and a garland creates a lovely winter theme.
Rarely do pictures come out perfect on my first try.
That's why it's best practice to use an app like Lightroom (the mobile Lightroom app is free and user friendly) to straighten, crop and subtly brighten your photos.
Lightroom even has great tutorials made by professional photographers to teach you how to take your photos to the next level.

]]>Do you love sewing with french terry but struggle with binding? Do you want to learn how to create professional-looking knit garments with this cozy and versatile fabric? If you answered yes, then this video is for you!
In this video, I’m going to show you how to sew knit binding with french terry in 5 easy steps. You’ll learn how to cut, fold, pin, sew, and finish your binding like a pro. You’ll also see some tips and tricks to avoid common mistakes and achieve a neat and clean result.
Knit binding is a technique of finishing the raw edges of knit fabrics with a strip of fabric that is folded and sewn along the edge. Knit binding can be used for necklines, armholes, hems, or any other edge that needs a clean finish. Knit binding can also add some contrast and interest to your garment.
French terry is a type of knit fabric that has loops on one side and smooth surface on the other. It is soft, stretchy, and comfortable to wear. It is also easy to sew with and doesn’t fray or curl much. However, french terry can be bulky and stiff when folded over itself, which can make it difficult to hem or finish with traditional methods. That’s why knit binding is a great option for french terry. It creates a flat and smooth edge that doesn’t add too much bulk or stiffness. It also gives your garment a more polished and professional look.
We can't wait to see what you create!
